Scale 1 : 1,16

2015 / ongoing

At almost 7 feet tall, Wouter Corvers is beyond average, yet very aware of the norm when it comes to the scale of public space. Why is every bench, toilet and money machine made for a height of 5 ft 8 in, when mankind is much more diverse?

‘Scale 1 :1 .16’ is a toolkit that makes clever use of the landscape to create a comfortable resting point for all. This set of test benches has telescopic legs and a built-in spirit level. By placing one side on higher ground –  a stairway, slope, kerbstone or any other object – the height from ground to seat varies. Passers-by are free to choose their favourite position. When the test proves what works best, the temporary object is replaced by a more permanent design.

In June 2017 we've installed 8 yellow benches in neighborhood 'De Slagen' in 's-Hertogenbosch. We didn't have permission but our benches are still there!

This publication (Scale 1 : 1.16 - Wouter Corvers) describes the complete design process. I includes public interventions, visual research, toolkit and the essay: 'Diversiteit in de publieke ruimte'.
